About Markham Feather & Nest

We started because Markham's bird owners kept running into the same wall: plenty of pet sitters, almost none who actually understood birds.

How Markham Feather & Nest Began

The idea came out of years spent volunteering with avian rescues and living alongside birds of every size and temper. Over that time one pattern kept repeating: a sun conure that needs constant company and a canary that wants to be left in peace are two completely different jobs, yet most sitters treated them the same. Markham owners, plenty of whom keep species their families brought from halfway around the world, told us they could never find anyone who grasped that. So we built the thing they were describing.

It began the old-fashioned way — one happy owner in Unionville telling a neighbour, then another. Word carried through Markham Village, Cornell, and Berczy, and what people kept repeating was that the care felt different. We do not simply fill a bowl and leave. We learn which perch your bird claims as its own, the treat it will do anything for, and the particular sounds that tell it everything is fine. Those small things are what hold a bird together when it is away from you.

We now look after dozens of households across Markham and the towns just beyond it, and the aim has not shifted: care knowledgeable and warm enough that your bird barely registers it left. We keep reading, keep going to avian care workshops, and keep widening the list of species we can confidently take on.

The Values Behind Every Stay

Compassion First

The bird's wellbeing settles every call we make. When comfort or safety pulls one way and convenience pulls the other, the bird wins.

Inclusive & Welcoming

Markham brings together people and birds from all over the world, and we like it that way. Every owner and every species gets the same care and the same respect at our door.

Continuous Learning

Avian medicine keeps moving, so we keep up — workshops, new veterinary research, and one more species added to what we know, year after year.

Community Connection

Markham is home, not just a service area. We back local avian rescues and help put bird owners in touch with good resources and with one another.

How We Care for Your Bird

Nothing about a stay here is improvised. It opens with a real conversation — your bird's history, what it eats, how social it is, any health flags we should know about. From there we set up a meet-and-greet so the place and the people are familiar before the booking proper ever begins.

Once your bird is with us, we work from a written plan that tracks its home routine as closely as we can manage. In practice, that comes down to this:

  • Detailed intake questionnaire covering diet, schedule, medical history, and behavioural preferences
  • Free in-person meet-and-greet so your bird can acclimate to our team and environment
  • Customized daily care plan that mirrors your bird's home routine as closely as possible
  • Enrichment rotation including foraging toys, music, and supervised social time
  • End-of-stay summary report with notes on appetite, behaviour, weight, and overall wellbeing

Scheduling, intake calls, and the day-to-day back-and-forth with owners all run through Tyler. An animal sciences background plus five years of practical bird care mean he is the one making sure each guest's plan actually fits and that no owner is ever left wondering how things are going.

Jasmine Okafor

Bird Enrichment & Wellness Specialist

The foraging puzzles, the enrichment schedules, the slow work of getting a shy bird to socialize — that is Jasmine's domain. Trained in animal behaviour and quietly obsessed with what keeps a bird mentally well, she is the reason longer stays here never turn into dull ones.
